JAMES WELDON JOHNSON FELLOWSHIP IN THE ARTS

The James Weldon Johnson Foundation awarded a James Weldon Johnson Fellowship in the Arts to three people in 2021. The artist-in-residence program resumed after a year-off in 2020 due to Covid-19 and continues to enjoy a partnership with Bard College at Simon’s Rock and their premier facilities in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts. The foundation has awarded a stipend, room, and board, and access to James Weldon Johnson’s summer retreat, Five Acres, to three to five artists since 2017 to help further the pursuits of established, mid-career, and emerging visual artists, writers, scholars, and others whose work represent the values that James Weldon Johnson dedicated his life to: social equity, creative expression, erudition, social justice, and community.
