“Lift Every Voice and Sing”: A Universal Hymn for All Americans

The James Weldon Johnson Foundation is championing a historic initiative to recognize "Lift Every Voice and Sing" as the official National Hymn of the United States. Written by James Weldon Johnson in 1899 to commemorate Abraham Lincoln's birthday, the hymn was not intended solely for any one community. Instead, it was crafted to transcend race and celebrate the shared humanity, struggles, and triumphs of all Americans.
