A Legacy of Song: Honoring 125 Years of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at Super Bowl LIX

The James Weldon Johnson Foundation and the NFL are joining forces to celebrate a defining moment in American history—the 125th anniversary of the hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” On Sunday, February 9, 2025, during the Super Bowl LIX pregame ceremony at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Grammy Award-winning artist Ledisi will lead a powerful performance, joined by 125 high school students from the Greater New Orleans area. This celebration, broadcast live on FOX, will commemorate both the hymn's remarkable legacy and the resilience of the New Orleans community.

Rufus E. Jones, Jr., Co-founder and President of the James Weldon Johnson Foundation, stands beside Ledisi in the photograph below, capturing a powerful moment, symbolizing the deep connection between the enduring legacy of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and the vibrant, contemporary voices that carry its message forward. It reflects how the hymn continues to inspire and empower new generations, reminding us of the unbroken thread of resilience, unity, and hope.

A rehearsal video offers a glimpse of the performers’ dedication as they prepare for the monumental occasion. The student singers, who Jessica Harvey will lead, rehearse with an energy and passion that pays homage to the original performance by 500 schoolchildren on February 12, 1900 in Jacksonville, Florida. 125 Voices for 125 Years

Originally written to honor President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” has become a powerful symbol of perseverance, unity, and hope. Now, 125 years later, 125 high school voices from the Greater New Orleans area will echo that message at one of the world’s largest sporting events.

Their performance marks the debut of the Greater New Orleans High School Choral Collective, a new ensemble formed for this momentous event. Directed by Jessica Harvey and supported by 10 fellow choral directors, the collective seeks to become a lasting institution that preserves excellence in choral music and highlights the importance of vocal music programs in education.

“Music is part of the soul of New Orleans,” Harvey expressed. “This performance is not just about honoring history—it’s about ensuring future generations understand their role in carrying it forward.” Support the Legacy

The James Weldon Johnson Foundation invites you to support its mission to preserve and promote Johnson’s lasting contributions to civil rights, arts, and education. Donations help fund programs that uplift communities through music, literature, and activism, ensuring that future generations continue to find strength and inspiration in Johnson's work.

As the world tunes in to the Super Bowl LIX pregame ceremony, these 125 voices will remind us all of the enduring power of song to unite, uplift, and transform. Whether you’re watching from the Caesars Superdome or from the comfort of your home, this performance will be a profound tribute to the voices of the past and the dreams of the future—brought together in harmony.

Watch the rehearsal video to see the students in action, and donate today to support this powerful legacy.
